Last day in japan

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I came back from Tokyo yesterday. I didn't get to go to Yoyogi park because it was raining all day long. I know that usually won't stop the locals gathering there, but for me it was a good reason not to go. Especially since I didn't pack any warm clothes and I only had aa pair of sandals with me. Not the best idea to go to a park under the rain.

Where I went was to Asakusa, which is as beautiful as everyone said, and also to Akihabara where they have more gadgets and shops than I though possible. Before returning to Tokyo I made a last stop in Mandarake, because one can never have enought doujinshi and back to the Shinkansen. This time I paid attention as [info]kamapon told me to, and I managed to see (I think) Mount Fuji.

And the thing I had beeen dreading since the beginning of my trip happened yesterday... I think it was my paranoia what caused my denture to break again. Honestly, I can't wait for next year to have the implants done an be rid of this fucking thing for good. It wasn't as bad as the previous times, I can still use it, but I will have to go get it fixed again as soon as I arrive in London.

And today is shopping day... I have most of everything I need and most things I don't. I just bought my costume for the Salon del Manga next month (I need the wig, but that's easy) and some more things.

I don't want to go back...

Tokyo days... I don't remember which ones

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Second day in Tokyo and I don't think I can walk anymore. My feet are killing me.

I arrived yesterday afternoon via Shinkansen, and let that be a lesson for you London transport on how to run a train service. 16 coaches of comfortable sits running every 10 minutes. And fast, very fast. I didn't even mind (much) the fact that it's bloody expensive. The hotel is nothing to write home about, and being a youth hostel I have to be back before 11pm. Well, at least is cheap and centric.

Apart from that, Tokyo is exactly as I imagined. Buildings and more buildings of concrete, steel and glass and infinite shops with the cutest things I've seen. After the days visiting Temples and the old Japan it's exactly what I was craving.

Yesterday I went to Ikebukuro and Shinjuku, it was cool the live that you can see in those places at night and the neon lights and everything. It's really busy and it looks like there are millions of people walking around you at any given time. I went to the observatory in Shinjuku Government Building and watched the city from the 45th floor. Beautiful.

And today I walked more than it should be advisable wearing sandals. I first went to see the Imperial palace, unfortunately when I arrived there it started raining. Well, I should have known. Still I walked under the rain, seeing the parts of the palace open and then walked down Hibiki Park to see Ginza.

Here I had a surprise. There was a festival going on, an Edo festival with races and everything. I had a look around and saw the people and the beautiful chariots (I think that's the word but I might be wrong) but decided against staying to see the race because of the rain.

I continued to Ginza, which looked quiet and deserted in this hellish weather. And also because it was a bit early, before noon nothing was open. From there, and just to keep on with the commercial theme I went to Shibuya and Harajuku. Wow. Impressive places. Shibuya is enough to drive anyone mad and Harajuku has the best shops ever. Hundreds and hundreds of shops and thousands of people going from one place to another. A big contrast from Nara and Kyoto.

And from there I went to Roppongi, unfortunately it started raining again when I was there and my feet decided to stop carrying me around by the time I was getting soaked again. So back to the hotel to get some rest.

Tomorrow I'll walk around Tokyo some more and probably go mad at the comic stores, which as the addict I am have already located (and tried).

I'll post pictures soon, when the internet connection is a bit more reliable than now.

Kyoto days 6 and 7

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I spent the last couple of days in Kyoto, which is not enough to see the city and only served for making me want to come back.

The fist day I didn't get to see many things, mostly because after I arrived and checked in the ryokan I was going to spend the night in, when I came out for sightseeing,
It was raining. I thought it wouldn't matter, a light drizzle isn't enough to spoil my fun.

Well, I was wrong. It didn't stay light for long. I went out and moved to Gion, the old geisha district, with the intention of seeing the temples around there. By the time I arrived to the fist temple I was completely soaked. It didn't stop raining. At all. I continued my walk out of pure stubbornness and went to visit the big temple under the rain. The temple was beautiful, and from it you could see most of the city already illuminated.

When I couldn't feel the rain falling anymore (not because it stopped, but because I was so drenched) I decided it was time to go back to the ryokan.

One thing to note about the ryokan. Shared bathroom. Japanese style bath. I want one! My God, it's the cleanest and most comfortable thing I've seen. You wash yourself outside with the shower and the buckets and then immerse in a huge bath of hot water. It's so relaxing! I'll try to book another ryokan for Tokyo…

After a lovely night of rest, I continued the sightseeing. I didn't get to the Imperia Palace but Saw the Heian Shrine with the most beautiful garden, and Nijo castle which has the squeaky nightingale floor (paranoia much?) and some more temples. The thing with the temples is that even if they are beautiful once you've seen four of five they tend to mix in your head. In one of the Temples I caught prayer time, when people would just come in and join the monks chanting and praying. I watched for a couple of minutes, but decided against taking pictures.

Before coming back I made a stop at the food market, a very interesting place where they sell typical ingredients for the most delicious food.

And then on the way back I met a curious guy. On the train I happened to sit net to a Japanese old-ish man. He started to talk to me, in a very stilted English we managed to communicate. Naruse-san then made me two beautiful name cards with my full name in Kanji and told me about his travels.

And finally, just to show how very small is the world. When I was waiting for Alicia in the hotel I met some Spanish guys. They are from a touring Flamenco company that is popular here in Japan and plays today in a big department store. I talked to them for a while, because, yeah, we are all from Madrid. And surprise, one of them turned out to be from my own neighbourhood. What are the chances of that? We were both very shocked, since we knew exactly where the other lived just by saying the name of the place!

And today I'll just take it easy. I'm going to buy Amparo's gothic lolita dress and see this Flamenco show and not much else, really… just one relaxing day before going to Tokyo and walking all over the place again.
